One of the newest additions to the World of Warcraft Cataclysm expansion set is the new profession Archeology. With the addition of Archeology WoW has inserted tiny fragments of the game’s massive history and lore into your playing experience. Unlike other secondary professions in the game, like First Aid and Cooking, Archeology does not often result in items or buffs that can enhance your skills, although at higher level it is possible to unearth rare weapons and armor. Of all the WoWprofessions, it is similar to Fishing in that it does not cost much gold but requires quite a bit of time to level all the way up to the 525 cap.
You begin the Archeology WoW profession by speaking to a profession trainer in a capital city. Archeology, unlike some professions, has no trainers outside the major cities, making it necessary to use your Hearthstone each time you need to speak with trainers or purchase the profession’s supplies.
There are only a few supplies to purchase, however, as you merely need a shovel to unearth the ground and find clues or fragments. You will only be able to see a few sites on each continent at a time, but this changes as you level up. The profession is set up to be level-adjusted, so that if you go to Outland (or Northrend) before being at an appropriate level in Archeology WoW will not let you dig in the necessary zones.
The Archeology WoW map indicator will not compete with your minimap indicators (for minerals, herbs or beasts, depending on your gathering profession) and can only be seen on the main map of a continent. Go to that area and begin to use the Survey ability, learned from a profession trainer, to begin the digging. When the survey shows up red, it means you are not close enough; yellow means slightly closer and green is a clear sign to dig, as you are within forty yards or so of a fragment. Each time you dig you gain a point, and each dig site may offer three profession points.
The fragments themselves are part of the wowprofessions as well. Through Archeology WoW and Blizzard are trying to make players conscious of the history of the game, so that all tablets are racially specific. If you turn up a Dwarf tablet, it must be combined with other Dwarf tablets to yield information or items. Sometimes the item you Survey up is not a tablet at all, but a pet that will trail alongside you or even an item or weapon.
Many players use an archeology addon when leveling their wowprofessions so you may want to use add-ons to make it easier to dig. Archeology Assistant is one Archeology add on that lists dig sites in leveling order, with directions to the closest one. It has lists of artifacts and a tool tip that explains dig sites, items, racial tablets, and locations in each zone. Archy is another Archeology add on that features the comprehensive list of items that the profession can dig up.
